Breaking Bread: Living as the New Humanity
As the New Humanity, Jesus calls us to a table not just of remembrance but also of real provision. His call sounds like this, “This is my body which is for you.” Now that sure is a strange call to partake in eating a loaf of bread but this is Jesus and He is not exactly known for doing things conventionally. Easter with Jesus
When Jesus was at his hometown he read from the Prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor.” And upon reading these words he sat down and said, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” The call of Jesus to visit prisoners reverberates through the centuries. Breaking Bread: The Exodus, New and Old
This Supper is a time of remembrance. We come together to remember the New Exodus. And, of course, we keep in mind the Old Exodus. That archetype of the Exodus we find ourselves in today. We eat the meal of the Paschal Lamb remembering the covenant promises of our God to take His people into a new land. This is not a land of weeping but a land of rejoicing.
