Charlottesville PigFest

Charlottesville will be having it's first PigFest on the evening of Saturday, March 4th.

Are you curious about what a PigFest is?

This idea of a PigFest arose out of other small groups throughout history like Wilberforce's Clapham Sect, Franklin's Junto and C.S. Lewis' Inklings. These small groups brought about change in the world through their understanding of the times and their discussion of ideas that led to action. It is in this spirit that we will gather for our PigFest. More information on this historic movement is available at the PigFest Society website.

What is required? Each person that comes to the PigFest should come with a proposition written on an index card such as "Arranged marriages are better for the individual, family and society." The proposition that is presented by each person will be the idea about which the discussion will revolve around.

When the PigFest begins the moderator will choose an individual to state his or her proposition. After which the person can explain their proposition briefly. Then the fun begins. For the next 15 minutes this idea is discussed. After the 15 minutes is up, the leader will then pick another person to present their proposition and discussion will ensue. This goes on for 4 - 6 rounds (not everyone's proposition will be used… but can be used at the next PigFest).

When the 15 minutes is up, the leader will summarize the ideas and then call on the next person. You may be thinking, "Why is this called a PigFest?" Well, it involves feasting on ideas and food.

Of course, there are rules to abide by during these 15 minutes. You have the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated. And then there is the Devil's rule. The Devil's Rule states that anyone can take any position, at any time, unanounced, whether they agree with that position or not.

Apathy about anything is not tolerated at a PigFest. It is a time to indulge yourself on great food and great ideas.

The power of PigFesting is found in the power of small groups of people. Small groups of people have had tremendous influence on culture. These small groups that were able to influence the culture first understood the culture. Like the men of Issachar they understood the times. This is what a PigFest is about. Discussing big and small ideas. Ideas are important. They drive our actions.
